In 1990, Guinness Brewing Worldwide (now Diageo) and Mel McNally, CEO of the Irish Pub Company were of the same mind that Irish Pubs were of historical value and presented a Great Global Business Opportunity. Mel founded the Irish Pub Company – which to this day remains the leading design build and fit out company for Irish Pubs in Ireland and around the world.

The Irish Pub Company Team embarked on a Country Wide Research Project on pub types and to learn why there was nothing quite like an Irish Pub. We defined the five main styles of Irish Pubs. Together, Guinness and the Irish Pub Company packaged the Guinness Irish Pub Concept for export and embarked on a road show around the world to showcase and sell the concept.
Within each of the 5 styles there are different design features all connected to Ireland, here we examine the Victorian Irish Pub created by the Irish Pub Company…

The Victorian Irish Pub

The Victorian Irish pub – the interior was usually lavish, with much use made of bevelled mirrors and stained glass, elaborate tiling and decorative brass.
With its attention to ornate detail and insistence on quality craftsmanship, the Victorian-style pub, often found in Dublin, harks back to the good old days of comfort, hospitality and enjoyment.
The counter would be beautifully carved in highly-polished hardwood and the walls panelled with rich, dark timbers. The older and more mature a pub like this becomes, the better it is, whether for an intimate chat in a secluded ‘snug’, or for singing and sociable conversation in the drinking emporium.
No two Irish pubs are alike each design is based on the story of that pub and which we tell through the design.

The Irish Pub Company are the only Guinness Approved supplier of Irish Pubs to this day. We are the ‘Official Partner of the Guinness Irish Pub Concept’ and have been audited to achieve this status.

In recent years the Irish Pub Company have developed our designs to reflect the more contemporary preferences of consumers and to revitalise the Irish Pub Concept – however these more contemporary designs are still embedded in heritage, Irish-ness, authenticity and showcase Ireland in a global way. There will always be a traditional design feature, for example the Victorian bar with dark wood and detail, but this will be complemented and made more contemporary through other design details in the pub – for example in Stamps Landing Vancouver we included modern features such as a double sided fireplace alongside the traditional Victorian Bar.
